Johannes Brahms: A German Requiem
Saturday, May 5, 2018 • 7:30pm | Immaculate Conception Church, 400 Saratoga Rd. Glenville NY
This four-hand piano version of Brahms’ Requiem was put to the test in 1871 after the version for orchestra was subjected to a chaotic premier. While piano transcriptions of his orchestral works were common for Brahms, the task at hand was more comply than usual: translating the highly independent and diverse instrumental parts to an effective accompaniment for the substantial choral writing. The result was an up-close and intimate version of A German Requiem – an arrangement for two players which allows for a degree of prevision and contrapuntal clarity that cannot be achieved in the orchestral version.
